Does dementia destroy a person’s faith?

Today I was reminded of an article I wrote very early on in my chaplain work with elders living with dementia. I just read it again, and it’s as true now as it was when I first wrote it.

Several years into this work, I continue to see miracles every single time I’m with elders with dementia. That’s a main reason I provide my Bible study guides, worship service agendas, and classic hymn downloads for free: I want as many people as possible to experience the joy and amazement I enjoy when I see God reach people despite their significant brain changes.

Enjoy the article, and please comment below with your own stories!

Peace be with you,

Thank you — yes, like you, I have seen amazing spiritual insights from those with dementia — it’s beautiful to see.

God bless you today in your work.

Happy New Year Elisa.  I found the article “Small miracles” very encouraging and gave a copy to a friend whose husband, an ex-pastor, has dementia.  The suggestion “ask the Lord- be urgent and sincere- to strengthen your memory of His promises.” Really inspired me and I thought it would be good to focus on God’s promises in my fortnightly “Bible & Hymns ” sessions at my sisters Aged Care home. I checked your devotions and the only one that seemed specific to this topic was Psalm 103 Forget not God’s benefits .are there any others you would suggest?I thought about laminating promises to give residents to blu-tack to their cupbards. So that over time they are surrounded by reminders of God’s promises. And what a witness to staff and visitors. This week I am modifying your lesson on Simeon to also include Anna. The theme is Faithful in Old age. I am reading the story from David Jeremiahs book “Why the Nativity?”RegardsRuth BellSent from my Galaxy

Ruth, I love that theme of God’s promises! I’ll see if I can come up with something to help with that. I’m also planning to record more short (5-7 minute) videos with devotionals along these lines, so stay tuned!
