Dementia-friendly church service: Suffering

This week’s updated nondenominational worship service is on suffering. The main message: When we rely on God, our suffering is never the end of the story.

As always, this service is suitable for older adults with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Concerned that the subject is too serious for elders with dementia? In my experience, because suffering is a universal experience, facing and talking about it with faith can bring peace and hope. But of course, do what’s best for your loved one or group.

Watch the 44-minute church service on suffering here.

And here’s the written agenda for a worship service on suffering.

Peace be with you,

    Hello Ms. Bosley,

A little over a year ago, I was led to lead an Assisted Living Bible study at a senior center. My neighbor and now teammate joined me to serve in this ministry at the senior center. Then the activities director asked us if we would do one for the Memory Care group which are dementia patients and brain injury patients.

We had no experience and felt overwhelmed but when I went online I found your website with your songs and lessons.

I felt it necessary this morning to tell you what the Lord has been doing through your ministry especially in regards to those songs for the memory care group.

You may wonder if this is having any impact and I want to ensure you that it is. I am not Catholic so I have used your studies as an outline that I have added concepts from the One for Israel Bible college, as well. And I have used your songs quite often, in fact, every single time.

I want to tell you how I have really started to identify with that little boy who brought the stale lunch to Jesus. And then watch him multiply it and feed many.

Some of these people are nonverbal can’t walk, can’t see, and yet when your songs come on, you can evidently see the Lord working in their spirit. It has been some of the most rewarding moments of my life. To see people come alive or weep or hold up their little finger while singing this, Little Light of Mine I’m Going to let it Shine, is an absolutely beautiful spiritual experience.

It is perfect for their minds, as all the instruments and flashy graphics can overwhelm them.

You may feel inadequate or not professional and I want to tell you how the Lord is using your ministry. I’m keenly aware that God used Noah to build the ark while professionals built the Titanic. It is in His Spirit, whatever we bring Him and He uses it for His glory and in His power.

I hope this encourages you. I want to thank you for all the effort you put into this and putting it online for free for people to use as the Lord leads. It’s been a complete blessing in our lives. Thank you! I know Judy, my dear teammate, feels the same 💕🙌

    Sincerely,

    Heather Wilson

Heather! For some inexplicable reason, I never saw your beautiful note until just now. I hope you’re still at this email so you get my reply!

Thank you SO MUCH for this incredible encouragement, which I especially needed today (more than a year after you wrote it! Technology, ugh!). People like you, who heed God’s call to minister to these dear elders, are the reason I do what I do — in addition to the moments of beauty that I get to see in elders when they hear the songs or interact with the scriptures. God is so amazing and creative, and he never forgets these dear ones.

If you get this long-delayed response, I would love to hear from you by email; you can reach me at elisa@spiritualeldercare.com.

      Many blessings in Jesus,

      Elisa
