Dementia-friendly church service: Gratitude (Thanksgiving)

It’s hard to believe that I’m already posting about Thanksgiving, but here we are! 🦃 I’ve updated this week’s nondenominational worship service on gratitude in anticipation of Thanksgiving.

If it feels a bit early to watch it this week, of course feel free to use it whenever it would work best for your group. As always, the service is suitable for older adults with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Watch the 44-minute worship service on gratitude here.

And here’s the updated written agenda for Thanksgiving.

If your elders (like me) remember having a cornucopia centerpiece for Thanksgiving, here’s a super-simple one they can make; fill with real or faux nuts, fruits, and autumn leaves.

In case you’re wondering or you like to think ahead, here’s my lineup for the next few weeks. Watch for updated Advent video services and written agendas, which I’m editing right now …

  • Nov. 16: Gratitude / Thanksgiving
  • Nov. 23: Service / Christ the King Sunday
  • Nov. 30: Advent 1: Hope
  • Dec. 7: Advent 2: Peace
  • Dec. 14: Advent 3: Joy
  • Dec 21: Advent 4: Love
  • Dec. 24: Christmas Eve Candlelight Service
  • Dec. 28: New Year’s Eve
  • Jan. 4: Epiphany

Peace be with you,

I want you to know how truly grateful I am for the material you so generously share in these emails and your website, SpiritualElderCare.com. In addition to my roles as a bereavement and spiritual counselor for Hospice of Havasu, I facilitate a Bible study at a local nursing home once a month. I’ve been implementing your Bible study guides in the lessons and the residents love the material.

Thank you and may you be abundantly blessed as you are such a blessing to others!

Hi Elisa, We are very grateful to be able to watch you every week and thankful for all your hard work. I just wanted to mention that in Australia we have Autumn instead of Fall. Thankfully, we see so many American TV shows that we knew what you meant. Although, many of our Aged Care residents had no idea what you were talking about. I am not sure if it is just America and Canada that call that season Fall. Also, for next year, the Aussies have ANZAC Day and we just had Rememberance Day, which is 11th Nov at 11am. You are loved internationally and you do a great job keeping up with all our differences, but as you have said we are more alike than different. Kind regards, Sally (Activities Assistant)

Sally, thank you! I had no idea that Australians don’t use the term “fall” — that’s super helpful and interesting. If/when I update that service I’ll be sure to make the switch. Blessings on you and your elders.
