Dementia-friendly church service: Season of Creation

I’ve made slight tweaks to this week’s video service for the Season of Creation. This interdenominational celebration runs from Sept. 1 to Oct. 4, the Feast of St. Francis, so you can use this service anytime during that period.

My generalized video service and written agenda can be used each year during the Season — and, as always, are specifically designed to engage older adults with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

However, do check out the wonderful resources on the 2026 Season of Creation site. An ecumenical team comes up with a new theme and free materials each year; this year’s theme is Living Water.

Watch the 45-minute church service for Season of Creation here.

And here’s my general Season of Creation written agenda.

Some people deeply connect spirituality and faith with nature. This service includes the spiritual practice of slowly and carefully observing a physical item, such as a seashell or pinecone, while asking the Holy Spirit to reveal truth.

Spend time with elders gathering items from nature, such as feathers, stones, seashells, flowers, pinecones, etc. Put them on a tray and plan to pass them around during the service. Take time to encourage elders to describe what they see and feel in an object, including any memories tied to it.

You can also experiment with “name that nature sound” recordings (here’s a 2-minute version) or show large book or video images of natural vistas.

Peace be with you,
